With the release of the highly anticipated live action Beauty and the Beast, there was always bound to be some kind of controversy, I mean, when isn’t there?
Well this time, the reason for this was the gay scene that appears in the film, as well as the suggestions that the character LeFou is gay throughout the film.
After the news that the films release would be postponed due to these scenes in places such as Malaysia where homosexuality is still illegal. But of course, Disney being Disney, they refused to cut the gay scene. Russia, eventually approved the movie but stated that children under the age of 16 were banned from seeing it.
Ewan McGregor slammed the controversy stating “It’s 2017 for f***’s sake” while on the Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert. He then went on to say jokingly how the film was full of gay sex scenes that “There is lots of gay sex scenes” and that “If you live anywhere near Alabama you should not go and see this film. What would Jesus think?”
There is also another side in which the LGBT community think it wasn’t enough and that it was a poor tribute. There have been requests for years that there be an inclusive character within a Disney franchise, which considering the number of LGBT artists that work for the company. There have of course been nods towards the community throughout Disney, while never directly stated, characters such as Scar (The Lion King) and Jafar (Aladdin), have been drawn and voiced to stereotypically mimic that of Drag Queens.
While yes there is an exclusively gay scene within the new film, it is the bare minimum, along with the suggested gay references, that would in reality go over most peoples head, especially those of the children watching them.
There are 2 sides to every coin, in every situation, and I guess this is just another one of those times.
