Its a well known fact that all these celebrities have come out to their friends, family and the general public and in this day and age its not really as “shocking” as it once used to be. All these celebrities have come out at different times in their lives, careers and even decades, and we love them all for it!
Hers is probably one of the most famous we know of, especially since in April 1997 she posed on the cover of Times Magazine with the words “Yep, I’m gay”. This was followed by various interviews in which she stated that “I decided this was not going to be something that I was going to live the rest of my life being ashamed of” And with the 20th Anniversary of this iconic event, its not something we will soon forget.
This iconic actor, known for a short stint on OITNB among other things, came out as gender fluid, and who is currently dating Jessica Origliasso, says how when she was younger she didn’t really know how to explain what she felt, but when she came out to her mother just said “I think I should let you know that when I eventually get a boyfriend, they’ll be a girl.” Well, whoever she dates, we are still going to love her.
With his brilliant performance as Donovan in AHS, we definitely know this actor very well, he is very hard to forget. First being inspired by make up artist who he had previously worked with to come out, he decided that the best way to tell his parents who are devoutly religious was through a letter. Unfortunatley, what followed was a very long period of silence, around 6 months – he said “I would say within a matter of years we started to figure it out. It was a struggle” But with things on the mend, he finished by saying that “I’m here to tell people it can get better.” Well we thank you Matt.
This Prison Break star made it clear he was gay after he had to turn down an invitation to theSt. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia, a country which has recently passed an anti-gay law. His response which was soon made public was simply “As a gay man, I must decline.” He continued saying how he was deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. Don’t worry, we all are.
Another AHS actor on our list, and this time the coming out story, was completely accidental. In 2005 her broadway partner had just won a Tony, and as she went up to recieve it, Paulson kissed her. She later said “She won a Tony Award, I kissed her, and all of a sudden I was outed. I didn’t really think about it in that way at the time” Its just such a wonderful thing to do, why should she have done anything else?
Neil Patrick Harris
This star known for his womanising ways as the character Barney Stinson on the hit show HIMYM, came out as gay in a public statement – “I am happy to dispel any rumours or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.” And with that beautiful family he has, we know he can’t be wrong.
This is not something we will quickly forget, because in 2014 at the Time to Thrive conference run by the The Human Rights Campaign, during her speech she stated “I’m here today because I am gay, and because maybe I can make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.” Which was of course followed by a large and emotional round of applause. Anyone who watched the video, definitely experienced a tear to the eye. I know we did.
We applaud all of these people, and those who struggle with this everyday. Courage is not something we should take for granted.
